Maybe you’ve heard about this list before, and maybe you haven’t… The “Dirty Dozen” is a yearly list outlining the 12 “dirtiest” produce items. The produce on this list has been found to contain the highest levels of pesticides out of all the produce. It’s a good list to keep in the back of your mind (or on your refrigerator!) when coming up with your grocery lists. We need to always be aware of the danger that pesticides pose to our health; especially if the items on this list are things you eat weekly or even daily!
The official list for 2019 is here, but check the website every year to get an update!
Here is the 2019 Dirty Dozen:
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Kale
- Nectarines
- Apples
- Grapes
- Peaches
- Cherries
- Pears
- Tomatoes
- Celery
- Potatoes
Interesting. I grew up on a dairy farm where we had a huge garden and orchard. Even though we didn’t use pesticides, I was in the habit of washing everything well for dirt and bugs. This habit has stayed with me. Thankfully!! Always good to wash your fruits and veggies well!!

That would be the ideal situation for sure – having your own garden means no pesticides and chemicals! I’m hoping to grow some tomatoes and peppers this year – I tend to eat those the most out of all veggies.
